A 29-year-old Manoa man went to District Court this morning for his initial appearance on a first-degree kidnapping charge in connection with the alleged abduction of his ex-girlfriend.

Benjamin Riedel was being held on $100,000 bail.

Officers arrested Riedel Saturday after his ex-girlfriend escaped from his Pinao Street home, police said.

The incident began Friday night when  the 42-year-old woman’s current boyfriend dropped her off at her apartment in Waikiki at about 10:30 p.m. After her boyfriend left, Riedel allegedly confronted the woman, forced her to drive to his house on Pinao Street, and prevented her from leaving by locking the doors and restraining her, police said.

The woman screamed for help after Riedel allegedly threatened and assaulted her, and a 30-year-old man who lives next door went to investigate, police said. The woman got away when Riedel allegedly assaulted his neighbor, police said.
