Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel assisted two men whose catamaran overturned Saturday in waters off Haleiwa.

The men, both in their 20s, were aboard a 16-foot Hobie Cat when it overturned approximately two miles offshore near the surf spot known as “Backyards,” according to HFD spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada.

The men spent an hour and a half swimming toward shore when they were finally spotted by people on the beach who called for help.

Rescue personnel assisted the men out of the water and towed their vessel back to shore, Yamada said.

Neither man was injured.
