Causes of small brush fires along Haleakala Highway remain unknown

Maui firefighters were able to bring two separate brush fires on Haleakala Highway under control within 35 minutes Monday.

The fires burned small areas of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. along the highway, but did not damage any sugar cane, Maui firefighters said.

The fires were reported at 2:55 p.m., and were brought under control at 3:30 p.m. HC&S crews mopped up the hot spots.

The mauka fire at the Keahua intersection burned about a quarter of an acre on the shoulder of the highway, blackening the bushes.

The makai fire burned about half an acre of brush on the shoulder of the roadway.

A fire inspector was sent to the scene as well as police arson investigators to determine their cause.

However, fire officials said the cause of the small fires could not be determined.
