LIHUE >> Maalo could be the site of Kauai’s next landfill.

A consultant’s report for the county says Maalo is the only site identified with a “willing” landowner and is the most economical over the 264-year life of the landfill. The site is 2.5 miles north of Lihue and is considered centrally located.

However, the Garden Island reported today the site has the highest estimated initial cost of all sites, at $38.1 million. The report also says the site has possible wetland features that may require mitigation.

Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. proposed Maalo and said his administration would proceed with an environmental impact statement.
