Victim of motorcycle crash was Coast Guard electrician’s mate
Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Peejay Facun was set to report for duty as an electrician’s mate on the cutter Rush when he was killed last weekend during a motorcycle accident.
Facun, 27, was driving a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle east on Sand Island Parkway when he lost control of his bike and hit a street sign and streetlight post just east of the Training Access Road on Saturday afternoon.
He was taken in critical condition to Queen’s Medical Center with head and internal injuries. He died on Sunday.
The city Medical Examiner’s office said Tuesday it was still investigating the cause of death.
Facun enlisted in Coast Guard in 2011 and had been stationed at Jacksonville, Fla., before reporting to Hawaii, a Coast Guard spokeswoman in Alameda, Calif., reported.
It was the 41st traffic death on Oahu this year, compared to 32 at the same time last year.
