A brushfire in Wailuku near St. Anthony’s School burned to within 40 feet of homes before Maui firefighters brought it under control.

The fire broke out at about 8:16 p.m. Sunday night on an embankment across Lower Main Street from the school. The fire burned uphill towards homes on Lunalilo Street, prompting a call for additional fire units.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 8:45 a.m. and an engine remained on scene to mop up hot spots.

The fire burned about 2,000 square feet of brush and no structures were damaged.

The cause is under investigation.
