UH punter fined, ordered to attend classes in DUI case

University of Hawaii football punter Alex Dunnachie was fined $200 today and ordered to attend classes for alcohol assessment and driver’s education as part of his sentencing on a drunken-driving charge. 

District Court Judge David Lo also revoked his driver’s license for one year, although Dunnachie will receive a permit to drive a car with an ignition lock.

Dunnachie said the lock, which prevents a vehicle from starting if a blood-alcohol level is .02 percent or higher, was installed in his car three weeks ago. 

“I accept responsibility, and I’m happy to put this (situation) behind me,” Dunnachie said. 

UH head coach Norm Chow suspended Dunnachie for an indefinite number of games. Dunnachie has been allowed to practice with the Warriors, receive a scholarship and attend classes. 

Dunnachie was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on July 7. He pleaded no contest to the charge on Aug. 8.
