A former state prison guard pleaded guilty in federal court this morning to accepting money from an inmate and the inmate’s wife last year to smuggle cigarettes into Halawa Correctional Facility.

John Joseph Kalei Hall, 37, faces a maximum 20-year prison term when he is sentenced next March.

Hall said, “I received money from an inmate to purchase cigarettes,” and to deliver the cigarettes to the inmate and other inmates.

According to the grand jury indictment against him, Hall did this on Sept. 18-23.
