Pedestrian killed in Hawaii island semi-trailer truck crash

A Hawaii island teen died Friday night when he was struck in a crosswalk by a semi-trailer truck while crossing the intersection of Highway 19 and Paauilo Makai Road, county fire officials said.

Police have identified him as 17-year-old John Deluz of Paauilo.

Crews arrived at the scene just before 5:45 p.m. to find him on the side of the road with multiple injuries and no sign of life.

Hawaii News Now reports that Deluz ran in front of the Hele-On bus that he exited on the mauka side of Route 19 and into the road, where he was struck by a 1988 International semi-tractor trailer headed east, police said. He was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m.

The 22-year-old driver of the semi truck was not injured.

Traffic was blocked and detoured to Paauilo Hui Road while police investigated. It is unknown whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
