Guam bar owner gets life term for forcing Micronesians into prostitution

HAGATNA, Guam >> A Guam bar owner has been sentenced to life in prison in a sex trafficking scheme to force Micronesian women and a juvenile girl into prostitution.

The U.S. Department of Justice said today 70-year-old Song Ja Cha must also pay $200,000 in restitution to the victims and pay a $10,000 fine.

Cha was found guilty after an eight-day trial earlier this year.

According to court documents, Cha and others recruited and enticed about 10 victims to come to Guam from the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. Cha lured the young, mostly poor and uneducated women and 16-year-old girl to Guam by promising them employment in a restaurant or store.

Prosecutors say Cha forced the women to work long hours in sex rooms at her bar.
