South shores to get 8-foot waves

Surfers can expect waves along all shores through the beginning of the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for south shores, because of potentially dangerous surf on all islands through 6 p.m. Friday.

The waves were already building on the south shore, with 4- to 6-foot waves Wednesday, expected to rise to 6- to 8-foot wave faces this morning, although waves in Waikiki were a little smaller today.

A declining north swell is also expected to bring 3- to 5- foot waves to north shores. Another north-northwest swell is predicted to arrive on Friday and will peak this weekend.

Forecasters say the south swell could also last into Saturday.

West shores and east shores are also benefiting from the dual swells. Waves on the west side are expected to be 3 to 5 feet through today. Forecasters expect that 3- to 5-foot waves on the east shore will decline to  2 to 4 feet today.

The National Weather Service warns that the high surf, especially on the south shore, will create dangerous waves and rip currents.
