The Hawaii island community of Kailua-Kona is in last place of the 50 U.S. towns participating in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge.

The six-month competition, now at the halfway point, has the communities competing for the highest reported recycling participation for a chance to win a $100,000 sustainability grant from the company. Participants report their recycling activity online in order to gain credit for their communities.

Lakes at Red Rock, Va. is in the lead, followed by Huntington Woods, Mich., Horace, No. Dakota, Union Grove, Wis., and Hampstead, N.H.
