The University of Hawaii Board of Regents tasked UH President M.R.C. Greenwood with oversight of the UH Manoa athletic department early this year, well before this summer’s Stevie Wonder concert debacle, according to documents released by the university and the regents today.

The documents, Greenwood’s goals for the last three academic years, are part of her annual evaluation, and were discussed in executive session at the Jan. 19 board meeting, according to the meeting’s agenda.

UH released three years of Greenwood’s goals after a Star-Advertiser article today noted that the goals were not being released and that the Office of Information Practices had ruled that the UH president’s performance expectations are a public record.

Other documents that the Star-Advertiser requested under the Freedom of Information Act, including Greenwood’s self-evaluation, have not been released.

The athletic department goal states that Greenwood will: “As necessary, in cooperation with the Board of Regents, exercise oversight of UH Manoa Athletics during leadership and conference transition.”

In January, UH Manoa was moving its football team to the Mountain West Conference from the Western Athletics Conference and other sports to the Big West Conference.

UH Manoa was also in the midst of a search for a new chancellor, and Greenwood was looking at replacing then-Athletic Director Jim Donovan, according to testimony at last month’s first meeting of the state Senate Special Committee on Accountability.

Other goals for the president during the 2011-2012 academic year included: showing progressing legislative support and fundraising, advancing the university’s excellence and reputation, hiring a new UH Manoa chancellor by May, and to “continue to build confidence in the University and its management.”

The regents evaluate Greenwood on how well she meets her goals.

In May, the regents met to discuss Greenwood’s evaluation and rated her “exceptional.”

The regents are supposed to be beginning the process of setting Greenwood’s goals for this academic year.

However that may have to wait pending the outcome of a meeting today. The regents are to discuss Greenwood’s employment contract in a closed-door meeting at 2 p.m. at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

The meeting follows the recent contentious Senate accountability panel hearings looking into the Athletic Department’s loss of $200,000 in an apparent concert scam and the UH administration’s handling of the aftermath of the concert failure.
