A 50-year-old tourist from Alaska died at Straub Medical Center Sunday night where he was taken after the canoe he was in capsized near Kaiser Bowls surfing site in Waikiki.

The Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as Lane Maalona, of Anchorage. He had been brought to shore near the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon and was undergoing CPR by bystanders when ocean safety personnel arrived at the scene around 4:40 p.m. He was taken to Straub 20 minutes later and died at 11:41 p.m., officials said.
