A turtle was injured in an attack by a shark at Kanaha Beach on Maui.

Kanaha Beach Park near Maui’s Kahului Airport is expected to be open Tuesday morning, unless there is a shark sighting like Monday, said county spokesman Rod Antone.

Maui County  ocean safety officers closed a one-mile stretch of beach for a couple of hours today evening after seeing a shark chase and attack a turtle close to 3:30 p.m.

A crowd of 40 beach goers saw the attack, and the shark was estimated to be about 10 to 12 feet long, Antone said.

The sea turtle, sustaining lacerations to the right front fin, was transported to a state Department of Land and Natural Resources facility.

On Thursday, an 8-foot shark bit the board of a stand-up paddler at Kanaha Beach.
