Public high school students eligible for summer trip to China

Public high school students are encouraged to apply for scholarships to cover the cost of a two-week study tour to China next summer offered by the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council.

Students will have a chance to meet and interact with their counterparts in China and get a taste of urban and rural life there, traveling from Beijing to Xian and Shanghai. They will visit cultural treasures such as the Great Wall and the Terra Cotta Warriors, study Mandarin and

spend a weekend with

local families.

Full and partial scholarships for the trip are available for students in grades nine to 12 in public schools, including charter schools. Ten spots without scholarships are open to private or public high school students.

The trip takes place next June and is funded by a grant from the Freeman Foundation. The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council offers global studies programs at local high schools, as well as conferences, competitions and travel

opportunities.

A separate trip to Vietnam, focused on promoting literacy in elementary schools, is also scheduled in June and partial scholarships are available for that as well.

Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 19. They are available at www.paachawaii.org under “High School Program.”
