Redskins QB RG3 has mild knee sprain

ASHBURN, Va. >> Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says Robert Griffin III has a Grade 1 sprain of a ligament in the right knee and possibly could play in next week’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Shanahan said Monday that Griffin sprained the lateral collateral ligament on the outside of the knee when the rookie was hit at the end of a scramble late in regulation in the Redskins’ 31-28 overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Shanahan says Griffin has mild swelling and is receiving treatment multiple times a day.

Fellow rookie Kirk Cousins will start if Griffin can’t. Cousins threw the game-tying touchdown pass Sunday after Griffin was hurt.

The Redskins are 7-6 and have won four straight. They trail the New York Giants by one game in the NFC East.
