Japanese dance instructor receives kidney from dancer

The future successor to the Onoe Kikunobu Dance Co., a traditional Japanese dance school at the University of Hawaii, received the gift of a kidney from someone he never imagined: his colleague and student.

Howard Asao, 66, the future sensei who instructs on occasion at the school, received a kidney transplant at the Queen’s Medical Center on Sept. 25 and has recently gone back to dancing.

His donor, also a Japanese dancer at the same school, was 58-year-old Kat Koshi.

Queen’s held a press conference today with Asao, who performed a traditional Japanese dance now that he’s fully recovered.
