Teenager killed in Kalihi Valley moped crash is identified
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 17-year-old boy who died after a moped crash in Kalihi Valley Saturday night as Francisco Hufana of Honolulu.
Paramedics took Hufana to the hospital in extremely critical condition after his moped collided with a car at the intersection of Kalihi and Machado Streets at 11:24 p.m., officials said.
Police said the teenager was headed mauka when an automobile driven by a Honolulu man crossed the path of the moped while turning onto Kalihi Street from Machado street.
Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash for the automobile driver, who was not injured. Two passengers in the vehicle received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
It’s not known yet if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash for Hufana. The teenager was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Police closed Kalihi Street in both directions between Nobriga and Kamohoalii streets for several hours while traffic division officers investigated the scene.
