Kauai moves to revoke permits for Coco Palms Resort

Coco Palms has fallen into disrepair since Hurricane Iniki devastated it 18 years ago. While several development options have been discussed, current plans from Petrie Ross Ventures are on hold. The Maryland company, which bought the resort in 2006, has until 2013 to take action on its plan to turn the resort into a condominium and a hotel. Some say the wait has hurt Kapaa’s tourism recovery.
A Kauai County official has filed a petition asking the Planning Commission to issue an order against the owner of the defunct Coco Palms Resort to revoke their permits after the property has remained vacant since it was damaged by Hurricane Iniki.
“Twenty years of blight and inaction must stop now,” stated Planning Director Michael Dahilig in a news release.
A three-year extension of special management area permits issued to Coco Palms, LLC Ventures expired on Jan. 25 without a request for extension or update. Dahilig said the extension was granted because it was understood the project to restore the resort would be completed by deadline.
Attorney Laurel Loo who is representing Coco Palms could not be reached for comment at this time.
