UH women’s basketball team loses at UC Irvine

The Hawaii women’s basketball team could not complete an undefeated 10-day road trip, falling 64-52 to last-place UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., today.

UH (11-11, 7-4 Big West) ended the lengthy California trip 2-1 and remained tied for second place in the BWC thanks to Cal Poly’s loss at UC Davis.

The Rainbow Wahine trailed after the opening minutes and could not make up for UCI guard Jennifer Tsurumoto’s career-best 27-points.

Junior forward Kamilah Martin led UH with 12 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

UH cut a 15-point lead to 39-34 with 9:40 to play thanks to a 10-0 run, but the Anteaters responded from there to go back up double-digits and stayed in control the rest of the way.

UCI (6-17, 2-9) picked up its first home win of the season. The Anteaters shot 8-for-12 (67 percent) on 3-pointers.

Conversely, the Wahine shot 4-for-20 on 3s, 18-for-58 overall (31 percent) and committed 18 turnovers.
