The federal government is providing $275,000 in funding to improve a historic Hawaii island trail.

The U.S. Transportation Department money will pay for road, paving, parking and signs at the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail.

The trail follows an ancient shoreline footpath called the Ala Loa. The footpath was the major road connecting more than 600 Hawaii communities from the 15th through the 18th centuries.

The route is one of just 18 across the country to be designated a National Historic Trail. Others include the Iditarod, the Pony Express and the Trail of Tears.

The funding will also pay for trail treatments to improve user safety and protect cultural and natural resources. It’s aimed at enhancing visitor experiences while honoring Native Hawaiian culture and the environment.
