UH softball team swept in exhibition doubleheader

The University of Hawaii softball team was swept in an exhibition doubleheader with Tokyo Women’s College of Physical Education tonight to open the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

Erina Yamamoto hit go-ahead home runs in both games as TWCPE won the opener 5-4 and completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory.

Freshmen Loie Kesterson and Keiki Carlos both threw complete games for the Rainbow Wahine. Kesterson gave up seven hits, struck out three and walked two. Carlos took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the second game before TWCPE rallied for three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

In the first game, Misuzu Nakandakari gave TWCPE the lead with a three-run triple in the third inning. UH then moved ahead in the fifth on a pinch-hit grand slam by Leisha Li’ili’i.

TWCPE tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Akane Aoki and Yamamoto’s solo homer in the seventh was the difference in the game.

Carlos was in control for much of the second game and UH took a 1-0 lead on Kelly Majam’s pinch-hit RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. With two out in the top of the sixth, Aoki chopped an RBI single into left field to tie the game and Yamamoto followed with her second home run of the evening.

TWCPE added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Yuna Takahashi’s three-run homer.

The tournament continues Friday with No. 21/24 UH (13-5) facing Portland State at 8 p.m.
