A 26-year-old Waimea woman, walking on Kamualii Highway near the Kipu Road junction, died after she was hit by a sports utility vehicle Saturday morning, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

Police said the woman was walking west on the east-bound shoulder of the highway at about 8:55 a.m. when the SUV, driven by an 84-year-old Kalaheo man, struck her.

She died at the scene, officials said

Her name has not yet been released.

The driver was not injured.

Police closed Kamualii HIghway until about 12:20 p.m. while officers investigated the accident.

The death is the second traffic fatality of the year for Kauai.
