The City Council approved a bill banning smoking at five of Oahu’s most popular beach parks by an 8-1 vote today.

The bill now goes to Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Bill 72 (2012) bans people from lighting up at Kapiolani Park and its surrounding areas, Kuhio Beach Park, Duke Kahanamoku Beach Park, the beach portion of Ala Moana Park and Sandy Beach Park.

Council Vice Chairman Ikaika Anderson attempted to change the bill so that the ban would applied islandwide. But Anderson’s amendment was rejected, 5-4.
