Coast Guard helps evacuate cruise ship passengers

The Coast Guard is assisting in the evacuation of two elderly people from a cruise ship in American Samoa.

Hawaii Coast Guard officials say an air crew aboard a C-130 was dispatched Monday to evacuate two passengers from the cruise ship Star Princess. The Coast Guard says one of the passengers is ill and the other was injured in separate events.

The C-130 crew and the two passengers are expected to return to Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point this morning.

The Coast Guard says one of the passengers is a 91-year-old man and the other is an 82-year-old woman. It was decided to evacuate the two passengers after a Coast Guard flight surgeon determined transport was necessary to meet their medical needs.
