Hawaii state officials say they have closed a popular hiking trail along Kauai’s north shore in anticipation of wet weather over the weekend.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says streams along the Kalalau Trail could see flash floods.

Kauai County officials urged hikers not to take the trail to avoid being trapped by flash floods.

A flash flood watch is in effect as weather officials anticipate weekend thunderstorms in the western part of the state, including Kauai and Oahu.

State officials say they will evaluate conditions Saturday to consider whether to remove a sign indicating the trail is closed.
