No tsunami from 6.6 earthquake near Papua New Guinea
A moderate earthquake new Papua New Guinea did not generate a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said this afternoon.
The United States Geological Survey estimates the earthquake’s magnetite at 6.6. It struck at 3:11 p.m. Hawaii time and was centered 65 miles west-southwest of Panguna, Papua New Guinea and 421 miles west-northwest of Honiara, Solomon Islands at a depth of 40 miles.
No major damage or injuries were immediately reported.
