PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> A bird struck and damaged a Hawaiian Airlines plane flying from Honolulu to Pago Pago, forcing the airline to cancel its return flight from American Samoa to Hawaii.

Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Keoni Wagner says Monday’s bird strike damaged the Boeing 767’s radome or nose cone that covers navigational instruments.

The airline is sending a replacement on a plane that will return to Honolulu with passengers originally scheduled to leave on the cancelled flight. The airplane will depart Honolulu late Tuesday and leave American Samoa early Wednesday.

Hawaiian says it provided hotel rooms to affected customers who don’t live in Pago Pago. It’s also giving passengers a travel credit.

Hawaiian is the only airline with service linking American Samoa and Hawaii. Its twice-weekly flights operate every Monday and Thursday.
