When tuition bills add up to more than $12,000 a year, plus or minus $360 may not seem like a lot to individual students or their parents. Multiply that number by more than 25,000 undergraduates and the approximately $10 million the University of Washington and Washington State University are each waiting to hear about puts the ongoing legislative budget debate, and its potential impact on the tuition paid by students, into sharper perspective. SEATTLE >> A University of Washington student-led group says if the state doesn’t give the school money to give their teachers a raise, they’re willing to pay higher tuition to cover the cost.

The Seattle Times reports UW wages have been frozen for four years. The Provost’s Advisory Committee for Students presented their idea to the UW Board of Regents this week.

A tuition increase of 3 percent could pay for a 2 percent raise for faculty and staff in the next school year and a second 2 percent the following year.

This is the second year that students have been involved in budget discussions, and the first time they have presented a budget proposal to the regents.
