Woman being detained at OCCC found dead in cell
A 56-year-old woman, who was a pretrial detainee at Oahu Community Correctional Center, was found dead in her cell Saturday morning.
Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said the woman had been on suicide watch May 2 to 7, but had been returned to the general population.
Catherine Callahan was found at 9:25 a.m., and was unofficially pronounced dead at 9:35 a.m. by Emergency Medical Services personnel, Schwartz said.
Callahan was alone in her cell, located in Module 4, which was not a special holding cell.
Public Safety internal affairs, police and the Medical Examiner’s Office will be called in to investigate.
Callahan was sent to OCCC March 27. She had been arrested and faced charges for first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree assault and violating a temporary restraining order, Schwartz said.
