CHICAGO TRIBUNE

» What it is: A pillowcase with a hood fastened in the middle. Available colors are black, gray, red and blue.

» How it works: Insert a standard-size pillow into the case, which measures 20 by 32 inches. Then wear the hood to block out light and sound or ward off the chill of an airplane cabin.

» The good: The pillowcase material feels like a hooded sweatshirt. The hood easily shifts on the pillow in any way you prefer, so there’s room to maneuver. The case’s side pocket is handy for an MP3 player or to stow such accessories as earrings. There also is a small porthole from the pocket to the center of the pillowcase to help prevent headphone tangles.

» The bad: I wish economy plane seats were wide enough to accommodate a standard pillow. Those seats might require that you fold your pillow to keep from crowding the person next to you. Also, though the cotton and polyester material of the pillowcase feels like a comfy hooded sweatshirt, wearers with longer or brittle hair might want to wrap their locks in a scarf or bandanna to prevent breakage.

» Cost: $24.95
