Maui fire officials continue to monitor the compost fire that began Sunday afternoon in a Maui landfill and is considered to be 95 percent contained.

Two private firms — Maui EKO Systems and Pacific Biodiesel — operate within the Central Maui Landfill

Maui EKO Systems lost a grinder and two tractor trailers valued between $300,000-$500,000. Pacific Biodiesel lost two 20-foot trailers and two 20-foot tanks valued at $60,000.00. The compost pile is about two acres in size, about 30 feet high and in various stages of decomposition.

The fire started at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
