Maui fire rescue personnel assisted a 60-year-old windsurfer at sea when the mast on his board broke Saturday.

The man was reported missing by his wife around 6 p.m.

Firefighters from the Kahului Fire Station and a Maui Fire Department helicopter searched waters off Kanaha Beach Park for a half hour before locating the missing man, who was floating on his board between the wastewater treatment plant and the Maui Electric power plant.

The man, who was not injured, was airlifted to safety and his equipment was brought to shore by a rescue Jet Ski.
