Kauai police arrested a Lihue man for driving under the influence after he drove his pickup truck into the ocean near Lydgate Beach, county officials said.

Police said the 38-year-old Norman Akana, Jr. was driving his truck along the beach in an area known as Kitchens, behind the Wailua Golf Course when a wave struck it and pulled it out into the surf.

Three tow companies assisted in removing the submerged truck, officials said.

Police arrived to the scene around 4 p.m. Sunday to find the man uninjured outside of his Ford F-150 truck, officials said. Officers  arrested him for suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, refusal to submit to a drug test, and reckless driving.

Officials said Akana remained in police custody, with bail set at $4,000.
