The Army says its annual July 4th celebration at Schofield Barracks will only be open to people with military identification this year.

U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii says the event has been open to the public in the past. But this year the Army is restricting access because it expects military attendees will fill the venue to capacity.

That’s because most Hawaii-based soldiers are back from deployments this year. More people will also likely go to Schofield because budget cuts are forcing Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Marine Corps Base Hawaii to cancel fireworks displays. Schofield will have fireworks.

U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii commander Col. Daniel Whitney said in a statement Monday ensuring the installation’s safety and security is always the Army’s top priority.

The celebration usually attracts between 30,000 and 50,000 people.
