Suspect takes dump truck on wild ride through Waikiki
A 43-year-old man is in police custody Sunday after he allegedly stole a dump truck late Saturday night, hit two marked Honolulu Police Department cars, and drove the truck onto Waikiki Beach around midnight, police said.
Honolulu fire and police officers were searching waters off of Waikiki Beach early this morning for the man, of no local address, who allegedly stole a large dump truck that belonged to Kailua Construction Co. before jumping into the ocean.
The suspect drove onto the sidewalk of Kalakaua Avenue, swiping trees, before he abandoned the truck on the shoreline in front of the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel around midnight Sunday, witnesses and police said.
According to police records, the man entered the truck without permission around 11:48 p.m. Saturday, found the keys, and briefly drove around Waikiki — hitting two marked police cars — before coming to a stop on the sand.
A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter arrived on scene around 12:40 a.m. An officer said at the time the suspect had been spotted treading water off of the Kapahulu Groin pedestrian walkway.
Police located the man and arrested him around 1:30 a.m. on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment, and two counts of first-degree criminal property damage.
