The Maui County Police Department has acquired a Lenco “Bearcat” armored vehicle, county officials announced this week.

Maui officials said the Bearcat is a state-of-the-art armored vehicle that will provide the Maui Police Department’s Special Response Team with armored protection and tactical capabilities during high-risk operations.

The Bearcat vehicles are also equipped with blast fragmentation-resistant floors, specially designed gunports, roof hatches with rotating turrets, gun-mount platforms, gear storage and much more, according to the Lenco website.

The Honolulu Police Department’s specialized service division received a similar Bearcat armored vehicle in 2009.
