‘Safer Roads’ crackdown leads to DUI arrests, tickets for bicyclists and skateboarders

Honolulu police traffic enforcement efforts on the Fourth of July led to 14 arrests for driving under the influence on Oahu freeways and in Waikiki, police said.

Police also cited bicyclists and skateboard riders on the Ala Wai Promenade.

The citations and arrests were part of what police call “Safer Roads” traffic enforcement efforts.

Police said earlier they are conducting DUI checkpoints this weekend throughout Oahu.

According to the Honolulu Police Department website, traffic officers conducted “Safer Roads” enforcement efforts in Waikiki on Kalakaua and Kuhio avenues from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. and at the Ala Wai Promenade from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

They also patrolled Oahu freeways and major highways from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Kamakila Boulevard nd Na’u Place in Kapolei from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

In Waikiki, police issued 9 skateboard citations, 6 bicycle violations, 3 pedestrian citations and arrested 4 people for DUI.

The freeway enforcement effort led to 92 citations — 4 for excessive speeding, 45 speeding, 9 no insurance tickets, 7 driving without a license citations, 1 revoked license violations, 2 tickets for using a mobile electronic device while driving, and 24 other tickets. Police also made 12 arrests — 10 for DUI and two for other alleged offenses.

In Kapolei, police cited 6 people for driving while using a mobile device, 2 for child safety seat violations, three tickets for driving without a license, 12 miscellaneous tickets, one speeding and 4 other moving violations.

Police also conducted “Safer Roads” efforts in McCully and near the main police station on Wednesday

At South Beretania and Artesian streets, police issued 94 citations — 34 for failing to stop for pedestrians, 29 seat belt violations, 14 tickets for using a mobile device while driving, 9 miscellaneous tickets, 2 for driving without a license and 4 no  insurance tickets between 2:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

A DUI roadblock on Alapai and Beretania streets from 11:45 p.m. to 2:45 a.m. resulted in 8 arrests — 6 for driving under the influence, 1 for refusing to submit to a DUI test, and another arrest for a traffic offense. Police also cited one person for driving without a license.
