State restores tuberculosis clearance requirement

The state Department of Health has an adequate supply of solution used for TB skin testing and will resume providing the tuberculin skin test at all state tuberculosis clinics statewide on July 15.

People needing the test are encouraged to check with their provider.

In April, a national shortage of PPD solution — Tubersol and Aplisol purified protein derivative — prompted the state to issue a 120-day suspension of mandated tuberculosis clearance requirements for school personnel, students, food handlers, and workers in health care, domiciliary care, daycare and residential care facilities.

The temporary suspension of requirements for TB clearances expires on Aug. 9. Students enrolling in post-secondary school for the first-time in Hawaii may receive additional guidance directly from their university or college.

A list of state testing facilities and hours of operation are listed at the Department of Health’s website — www.hawaii.gov/health/tb .
