Keaulana and partner plan surf parks in Hawaii and California
Legendary Hawaii waterman Brian Keaulana and Kenan “Keno” Knieriem Jr. have founded Honokea Surf Parks to develop theme parks in Hawaii and Southern California.
Oahu-based Honokea has secured U.S. rights to the patented, Spanish-engineered Wavegarden wave-generating technology as a foundation for the surf parks.
The technology can generate small waves on which people can learn to surf, as well as high-performance surfing waves, the company said, in a statement.
The surf park design is scalable and the Wavegarden technology is designed to generate tubing waves that can break for more than 900 feet without losing power or shape, according to a statement.
Keaulana, son of world-renowned waterman Buffalo Keaulana, is himself a respected authority on surfing, water safety and risk management.
