A brush fire burning near Hulikoa Drive in Kailua-Kona burned over 1,000 acres and was still not contained or controlled this morning.

The fire, which was first reported around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, prompted an evacuation of the nearby Lokahi Makai apartments on Saturday.

Firefighters worked Saturday to protect structures in the Lokahi Makai subdivision.

The fire was burning in an area of dead trees and dead grass northeast of Hulikoa Drive into Kaiminani Drive.

Police closed Hulikoa Drive and  Kakahiaka Street for several hours as firefighters battled the blaze and reopened it early this morning.
