Police conducted a “Safer Roads” enforcement effort at an intersection near the H-1 freeway in Mapunapuna on Wednesday and a DUI roadblock near the main police station on Beretania Street, according to an update on the Honolulu Police Department website.

Police issued 99 citations from 2:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Puuloa Road and North King Street. Twenty-seven were for using a mobile device while driving, 35 were for seat belt violations, one for not using child restraint devices, 10 for no insurance, five for driving without a license, 20 miscellaneous traffic violations and one speeding citation.

Police also issued 3 citations and arrested two people Wednesday during a DUI roadblock on Alapai and Beretania Street from 11:45 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

The traffic enforcement effort is apparently not connected to a campaign police announced on Tuesday to step up enforcement of crosswalk and jaywalking laws at intersections heavily used by pedestrians.

Police Chief Louis Kealoha said police will be citing drivers for not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks and will be citing pedestrians for jaywalking in an effort to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities on Oahu. So far thsi year 15 pedestrians have died on Honolulu roads.

The intersection on Puuloa Road and North King Street is not heavily used by pedestrians.

However, a pedestrian efforcenment operation in Waikiki at Kuhio and Kalakaua Avenue early Wednesday morning resulted in 10 citations and one arrest for driving under the influence.

Police issued citations from 12:30 a.m. until 3:30 a.m., but did not give a breakdown of what kind of citations were issued.
