Maui County officials are getting ready for Tropical Storm Flossie’s expected arrival today, and they’re urging residents to do the same.
"Tropical storms can cause tremendous damage to our community," said Mayor Alan Arakawa. "Residents need to prepare for the high winds, heavy rains and powerful surf that this kind of storm system can bring. Use this time wisely so that we can avoid the mad last-minute rush to gas stations and grocery stores that we often see."
The county’s Emergency Operations Center was activated at 7 a.m. Sunday and all county facilities will be closed today in anticipation of the storm, officials said. All county parks and offices, including the Division of Motor Vehicle and Licensing offices and satellite offices, will be closed today, but automated trash pick-up will operate as usual, they said.
Maui County is under a tropical storm warning and the entire state is under a flash flood watch as of this morning. Flossie is expected to start bring tropical storm force winds to Maui on today.
County officials warn of the possibility of flash floods, mudslides, damaging high winds and dangerous high surf. They also said:
>> Maui Civil Defense sirens will not be sounding for this storm event, since sirens are only used for tsunami and hurricanes.
>> The public prepare by gathering emergency kits, and get food, water and fuel, and by securing home and property against heavy rains and high winds.
>> The U.S. Coast Guard also asks boat owners to check moorings and secure vessels.
>> Monitor news reports for updates and the Maui County website, www.mauicounty.gov.
