Maui shark attack victim on life support

The 20-year-old German woman whose arm was bitten off by a shark Wednesday in Maui is on full life support and in very critical condition, a Maui County spokesman confirmed.

“The family was asking that people respect their privacy,” spokesman Rod Antone said. “They’re going through a hard time.”

Maui Memorial Medical Center officials confirmed the woman’s identity Monday as Jana Lutteropp.

She was bitten in an area known as White Rock in Makena.

Meanwhile, officials at noon today reopened two Hawaii island beaches that were closed Sunday because of a shark attack that left a 16-year-old surfer with multiple cuts and puncture wounds to his leg.

The Pohoiki Boat Ramp coastline was closed after a grey-colored shark, about 8 feet long, attacked Ulu Napeahi, who is recovering at Hilo Medical Center.

Hapuna Beach was closed earlier Sunday after a reported shark sighting.

A Fire Department helicopter surveyed the area around the attack but could not locate the shark, officials said Sunday.
