Moiliili toddler killed after being struck by SUV is identified
A 2-year-old boy was killed this morning when a neighbor driving a sport utility vehicle apparently hit the toddler on a sidewalk in Moiliili.
He was identified as Filimone Asi, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Lt. Bobby Towne, of the Honolulu Police Department, said the accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. when a 2009 Toyota RAV4 driven by a 37-year-old woman struck the child.
The toddler died shortly after being taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition with multiple internal injuries. An autopsy will be performed Thursday.
Towne said the driver was taking her daughter to school. She had backed out of a private lane off Kapiolani Boulevard and started driving forward, striking the child whom she did not see on the sidewalk, Towne said.
Speed and alcohol are not factors, he said.
