Hawaii island police charged a 40-year-old Puna man Wednesday for allegedly pointing what looked like a rifle at police officers who were investigating a domestic dispute involving the man and his 24-year-old son.

Police arrested Jonathan P. Rodrigues Sr. of Mountain View on Tuesday on suspicion of two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, and charged him with those offenses Wednesday. His bail was set at $20,000.

Police recovered an air rifle Tuesday after Rodrigues’ arrest.

Rodrigues was also arrested Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree assault in connection with the father-son fight, but was released on that offense pending further investigation.

On Monday officers responded to an affray between the father and son. When officers arrived, the son ran into the forest, and emerged at 11 p.m. with substantial bodily injuries.

The son was arrested on two unrelated bench warrants for contempt of court.
