Honolulu is No. 6 among the 10 best U.S. cities for family vacations, according to the Family Vacation Critic website.

Research by the online family travel planning guide, a unit of TripAdvisor Inc., shows that 40 percent of parents say the most difficult part of planning a city vacation is finding a hotel that caters to families that also fits within the budget.

The next-biggest challenges are choosing the best attractions to see, locating good restaurants that welcome children; and getting around the city.

Besting Honolulu, according to survey respondents, were New York City at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Wash., D.C.; No. 3, San Francisco, Calif.;  No. 4 Chicago, Ill.; and No. 5, New Orleans, La.

Ranked after Honolulu at No. 7 was San Antonio, Texas; No. 8, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; No. 9 San Diego, Calif., and No. 10, Boston, Mass.
