Smoke still ingers over Maili where a brush fire in an empty lot ringed by homes burned early this morning.

Honolulu firefighters were able to contain a brush fire that burned to within 100 feet of homes in Maili early this morning.

The fire started at about 4:06 a.m. About 45 firefighters, eight engines and 3 tankers battled the blaze until it was contained at about 5:48 a.m., said Fire Capt. Terry Seelig, a Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames before it damaged homes, Seelig said.

Residents whose homes were threatened by the fire were evacuated to Maili Beach Park, police said. But the Red Cross did not open an official center.

Seelig said firefighters will be mopping up hot spots in the area for the next few hours.
