New graduating class to join ranks of HPD
Thirty-seven new police officers will receive their badges and be sworn into office tonight.
The officers will join the Honolulu Police Department when the 174th Police Recruit Class graduates at 7 p.m. tonight at the Hawaii Okinawa Center.
The class includes 34 men and 3 women, including a high school wrestling and judo coach who is also a certified emergency medical technician. Another new officer is originally from the Czech Republic and is fluent in four languages.
The graduation ceremony marks the completion of six months of classroom work and physical fitness training. The new officers will be paired with veteran officers to gain experience in the field.
